Girls on the Run began in Kansas City in 2007. Initially, two councils existed - Girls on the Run of Johnson County and Girls on the Run of Jackson County. In 2012, seeking to combine resources and expand the program to reach the maximum number of girls in the Kansas City area, the Board of Directors of both organizations voted unanimously to combine the councils. On July 1, 2012, Girls on the Run Serving Greater Kansas City was established. Girls on the Run Serving Greater Kansas City serves over 4,000 girls ages 8-13 years old each year. Our program sites are located at more than 115 different schools and community centers in 15 counties throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.
