Details:
PREMIER KENPO KARATE began as Universal Kenpo Karate located in D'Iberville, MS first opening its doors as a small, hard-core kenpo club in 1994 focusing on adults with contact the name of the game. The school soon established a reputation as the place to go for sparring. Thursday night became known as 'Fight Night" and with an open door policy, people came from across the gulf coast to try out their skills. Universal Kenpo also became known for producing high-level fighters with several winning regional kickboxing titles. During this period, the curriculum was based on the 16 technique format as taught by the WKKA. A different direction was taken by the studio in 1996 with more of an emphasis on modern kenpo as taught by Skip Hancock and Kenpo2000. It was also at this time that "Fight Night" officially ended. It was decided that the direction the sparring class was taking wasn't the direction the school wanted to go in regards to self-defense. We began to focus more on the self-defense and less on the fighting. Finding that the school was still lacking in a solid structure that was consistent with the school's personality, we once again searched for direction. In February of 1998, we officially joined American Kenpo Karate International under Paul Mills. This association has propelled our skill level into the next generation as well as introduced us to a group of kenpoists that have made us feel very welcome. As our comfort level increased, we opened up a children's program that grew phenomenally. Our growth level reached the point where we were out growing our location. In 2002, we decided to invest in ourselves by joining NAPMA (National Association of Professional Martial Artists) and finding a larger space. In 2003, My wife Tina and I purchased a 7,500 sq. ft. building converting it into the premier martial arts training facility on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with 1800 sq. ft. of Zebra mats, a 900 sq. ft. fitness room, and a 1000 sq. ft. gym with a complete line of Cybex equipment. This change also bought a new name, Infinite Horizons Martial Arts and Fitness. INFINITE in recognition of Senior Grand Master Ed Parker, and HORIZONS reflecting the journey that we all begin the day we decide to better ourselves by putting on a white belt or starting a fitness program. We offered AKKI Kenpo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Fitness Kick-boxing, and Boot-camp Crunch and had a reputation for producing quality students that could perform. Whether it was the classroom, the playground, the workplace, or just life in general, our students excelled because we expected them to. We gave them the tools necessary to meet our expectations and they continuously rose to the challenge. Unfortunately, on August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed our school as well as much of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. With no place to live and no infrastructure to support our business, Tina and I relocated to Kissimmee to stay with her family. We now call Saint Cloud our home and have decided that the time is right to open our doors again. We look forward to serving our local community, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and teaching one the most recognized self-defense systems in the world.
