Sensei Saunders is a Black Belt instructor certified by International Uechi-Ryu Karate Federation (IUKF) and the American Council on the Martial Arts (ACMA). She has been teaching karate classes since 1998 and is also a NAPMA certified cardio karate instructor. Prior to the Karate Do was assistant instructor in Sensei Steve DiOrio's Westwood Program.
Sensei Saunders has studied Uechi-Ryu karate with a variety of teachers including George Mattson who is currently the highest ranking Uechi-Ryu black belt (9th degree) in the united states and the man who first introduced Uechi-Ryu to the United States. In addition to Uechi-Ryu, she has studied other forms of martial arts including Tae Kwon Do and is trained as a RAD instructor. Sensei Saunders trained as a scholarship gymnast while in college which has helped provide a foundation for her later training in karate.
In addition to teaching karate classes, Sensei Saunders is a trained competition official and has judged a variety of tournaments including the New England Open, the Montessori Open, the New England Junior Open, the Mass Challenge, and many others. Before her judging activities Sensei Saunders had a very successful career competing herself. She took home the first place trophy for Kyu Kumite in the New England Open two years running as well as securing a trophy for Kata competition.
