Detail: One might ask, " What is Kenpo?" Kenpo is a way of life at simplest terms. The way you do things in your everyday life. On the martial arts side, Kenpo teaches strikes, blocks, stances, kicks, techniques, katas, weapons, Chin Na, Tai Chi, acupressure, self-defense, ground fighting, multi-man fighting, five animals of Shaolin, hand and eye coordination, balance, flexibility, strength, speed, endurance and so forth and so on. It also is a soft style. Instead of dealing with force, you redirect the force against its own self. Say if you pull a horse straight and it resists (or forces) you to halt, I mean, let's face it, he is stronger than you so you have to redirect it by circling around him to the side. In doing so, you pull him off balance and he is less likely to stiffen up. You have got his weak points and then circle back to lead him again. Same instance in stopping a horse you don't pull back at the force, you redirect it to the side. In this case, allowing him to slow down to a halt. The same thing applies with fighting - you redirect their motions to another side which can be either side, up or down depending upon the angle of the attack and situation. Kenpo also offers meditation to relax the mind and mental training, because physical training without mental training is like putting a loaded gun in the hands of a fool. We want to make sure that you are trained mentally to use your physical training in the right way and not the wrong way. It takes a real warrior (man/woman) and a scholar to look the other way. An unconfident person would be one who stands and fights. Remember that it is about peace with one's self and not anger that determines the true victor. What is Kung Fu? Most people think Kung Fu or Gung Fu (same meaning, Gung is Cantonese) is just for fighting and people on t.v. doing flashy moves in fancy clothing. That is the total opposite of what Kung Fu is. It does display self-defense, but in the most part, it too is your work of craft in every day living. Kung Fu translated in simple terms is something that you donate tremendous time and total achievement or accomplishment to a skilled area. A master in Kung Fu means the same thing but is extremely proficient at their craft. Some would say they are good at golf or football, maybe cooking, sewing, fishing, shopping, conversations, reading, writing, relationships, being a good spouse or parent, and yes, maybe self-defense. Also, Kung Fu practices cultivation of the mind, and to bend slightly and spring up stronger than before which requires patience that profits from mistakes and discipline, not the quick fix to things or the easy fast way to lose weight, get rich or what-not. With everything of good skill takes time and practice at that skill. Some people say, " How long do I have to practice Kung Fu?" I say, " Until you die." Because whatever your craft is, in this case, self-defense, you live it to the fullest and carry it with you for the rest of your life and it becomes your way of life. ~ Sifu Cheyenne
